Sitting over winter? Run or not?
#11
Mine sits for upto 6 months nearly every winter, outdoors under a car port with a cover on the car.
I remove the battery and bring it in the house, basement stays around 65* year round
I make sure the car is clean, which is generally is
I do change my oil/filter right before storage
I add TECHRON to a completely full tank of premium non ethanol fuel
Then it just sits all by itself unmolested for the 4, 5 or even 6 months of winter and salt salt salt...
I am not a fan at al of battery tenders as I have seen them kill more batteries than they save. if you really feel the need to charge it, just hook it up once a month for 30-45 minutes on a 2 or 3 amp charger
And no I would not be starting the engine at all unless you are going to be running it for atleast 30 minutes to get rid of the moisture you create.

Well, lately I have been running it for at least 30 minutes but I can see where once salt is on the roads, I will not be driving it at all. I didn't change the oil before winter but it was changed about 1,000 miles ago. I will change it first thing in Spring.
And will likely pull the battery out here in the next few weeks.

Good call, and 13V6 made a good point about storing it with good gas, DON'T use any ethanol gas for storage. Only real gas which is only the premium 93 octane stuff around me. My car also sits for 5-6 months every year. Come spring, I reconnect the battery and it's always started right up like I just parked it 10 minutes ago.

Hi everyone,
I have made a few posts but since we're new I'll still clarify that I represent STA-BIL®.
There have been a lot of GREAT comments. Specifically on trying to keep the fuel tank close to full and running a high quality fuel stabilizer. Today's ethanol blended gas can begin to break down in as little as 30 days so using a stabilizer is important. We find that running the car every once in a while during storage isn't really necessary (certainly won't do any harm either).
Our recommendation is to fill the tank about 95% full, add a high quality fuel stabilizer, then run car for about 10-15 minutes to ensure the entire system is treated.
I may be a little biased, but I would recommend STA-BIL®...
Have a great day!
