Default T-5 Problem won't go into 2nd and 4th gear

Just fixed the brakes (thanks for the help from you guys). I reinstalled my T-5 as I had it out to fix the tailshaft seal leak, and put on an upgraded throwout bearing shaft because the factory aluminum one had broken into. I started it up drove it down the road. 1st gear is fine but I hear a loud whine that gets louder as rpm increases (kind of like being in reverse), I shift to second and release the clutch and the trans grinds and won't go into gear, 3rd is fine and 4th gear is the same as second grinding and won't go into gear. I have the factory shifter. I added dex/ merc to the T-5 as some spilled out when I took it out. Hopefully somebody can help me out. Thanks

did you transfer the shim from the oem retainer over ?? the shim i usually set up with 0 end play, the shim is what sets the preload on the front bearing in the retainer

I did not see any shim. That said I took the old retainer off (nothing came off with it. Cleaned the make a gasket off the transmission and installed the new retainer. I looked to make sure nothing else came out when I removed it and nothing did. Would it have stayed in?

looked at a video on you tube. I see what your talking about. So I don't have the old one. Is it something I can buy and will fix the problem? Would it cause all the problems listed? Also I now have a trans fluid leak from the bottom rear of the case at the gasket. I'm thinking maybe I should just have it rebuilt... Opinions?

you'll have to reseal it, as for the shim.....it is behind the bearing race in the retainer.......did you reuse the race?? if so shim may have fallen out somewhere.......to much end play can cause your issue and or other things......the shims come in a rebuild kit, I have tons laying around.....but it's a matter of which thickness to use....unless you've set them up before it'll be try one and check end play and go up or down in size based on play

Ok. I threw away the old bearing retainer with race and shim. I have an old t-5 here but the shim and race are too large to fit in the Ford Racing replacement bearing retainer. Does anyone know where I can get the proper size shims and race for the bearing retainer without ordering a $400 rebuild kit? Thanks

the race and shim for a t-5 are all the same and should fit every aftermarket retainer......there is no special size race for a frpp retainer, they all use oem races....unless the old t-5 you have is not a t-5 or what you say it is?? and sometimes you have to lightly tap the race in if it's not centered properly and remember all shims are not the same size in every t-5, you have to go through the procedure I mentioned
