C4 is probably cheaper and stronger than the AOD but lacks the overdrive so if you plan to use performance gears (3.73 or higher) your gas mileage will suffer more with the C4. I personally like my C4 for it's intended drag racing purpose.

My question about the whole thing is will the car with a carb pass an emission test?

really you can run a big or small bell 157 tooth or the 164 is what you will come up with. they make a smaller one that was in the old Mustang 2s but they are hard to find. So stay with the 157 or 164. Stay away from the c5 bell it is deeper and takes a special converter due to the lock clutch up in the converter. All the bells swap around. The smaller bell gives more room to work on stuff and helps with headers by far. But it also will push you into a A/M flex plate due to the smaller tooth count. If you ran a big bell all you would need is a flex plate from like a 87-93 AOD they work but it is the 164 tooth. find the trans and go from there. It is also better if you can find a case fill unit over the pan fill but either will work. They say the pan fill are better I dont think thats so. If I was looking, I would be looking for a C5 they have better oil passages but they also need a different bell and valve body from the C4. They came in 79 and up Ford car and truck not sure on the exact years. easy way to tell them apart from a C4 is the front band adj. screw on the left side in the front will be fine thread and the rear band adj. screw in the back will be course thread. But dont lose sleep if you cant find the C5 case the C4 case can be modded to the C5 stuff. I do it all the time.
