Default One last problem - Clutch Cable Seems Too Long

Just finished a clutch replacement on my '92 GT. It turns out I have an aftermarket quadrant (aluminum) but no firewall adjustment.

With the old clutch the adjustment on the clutch fork end was about 1/2" of threads left.

Now with the new clutch the adjuster nuts are "bottomed out" (out of threads) and the clutch isn't releasing (not enough travel, cable is too loose).

I guess I need to buy a firewall tension adjuster but why is the old cable too long for the new clutch?

Thanks

As the clutch wears it takes up slack in the cable. This is why every so often you need to let some tension out of the cable to avoid the clutch slipping. You could possibly get by for now by adding some washers or a spacer behind cable adjuster on the fork side.

do it right....buy the firewall adjuster, it'll solve the issue and allow you to adjust pedal height as well

Default Found the Problem

I removed the cable and found that the clutch cable was trying to come through the fire wall.

Of course it needs to be repaired properly but I can't do the further dis-assembly needed to fix it properly, I'm making some plates to reinforce the firewall. Pictures will follow.

I've fixed that issue more than once for customers.............if the hole is not salvagable, make a plate and weld it in..........that is the only proper way to do it.........I weld them up from the front and from the back/inside the car and they never break out again, iirc I remove the pedal assembly to get a better shot from the inside.......going on 5 years on my own ride with that repair and not so much as a crack
