Default padding on gas tank? paint?

hey guys
took out my old tank, there was some padding on the top, not sure why, maybe to protect against vibration?
anyway, i am replacing the tank, and the new tank doesnt have the padding. is this a must have?
do i need special padding if so?

also, do you guys paint your new tanks before install?

Thanks!

i have had good luck cutting up and old tire tube to use as replacement for the "padding" its only there to prevent chaffing between the tank and the body. most tanks have a galvanized coating and paint doesnt like to stick to it well. i have undercoated them with spray rubberized coating with no problems

i ended up using some pipe insulation. was about the same thickness and density as what was there.

working on the ground in my gravel driveway, put jacked up the tank, got the strap fastened on the passenger side, went to insert the filler neck. wtf. cant do it with tank in place, has to be put in before lifting. great. undid the tank, lowered it, got the filler neck in alittle, raised tank a little, put neck in more a little, finally got it in place and fastened on passenger side. then i noticed the filler neck bracket wasnt on. fvck!! undid it all again, lowered etc, put bracket on neck, inserted, raised etc. took forever to get the driver side lined up right. total pain in the ***.
i worked on it for about 6 hours i think (including going to pick up a new fuel filter and insulation). probably can do it in about 1 next time.
