there should be no springy at all.........if it is binding or not closing to one position the problem is in the heater box....often warpage causing the blend door to bind....seen it plenty in these old foxes......you are making a mountain out of a mole hill......the control panel is just a know attached to a toothed slide, that connect to the cable......if control head is fine and cable are fine...it's obvious where the issue is

Ok so I have talked to a couple mechanics. Around the blend door is some type of weatherstripping material like a cushion. This is what seems to cause the springiness and why there is no positive stops. It will compress with pressure but will go back to its original form when pressure is released.
