Default aod ?s

I have a 1990 GT that the aod was crapping out .I bought another rebuilt aod from a mustang but not sure what year it was from. I swapped out transmission but now the starter grinds and wont engage. It did for the first 2 starts but that was it. I thought it might be the starter so I bought a new 1 and the same thing happens. My motor is a 347 with 28oz flexplate. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

If all you did was swap tranny's, they make a shim for Ford starters.

When my car had a AOD, the starter engaged, but made the worst grinding sound when turning the engine over. It was really embarrassing. I stopped by Autozone and bought that shim and now it cranks nice and quiet. Night and day difference.

Hopefully that's all it is.
