Shifting issues 91 5.0 AOD
Just bought a 91 LX convertable. Noticed it was shifting way too soon in 3rd then to fourth at very low speeds. I youtubed a few videos and found it may be the TV cable out of adjustment. Upon inspecting my TV cable, I found than someone along the line had tried to "fix" it by just inserting the cable "box" back into the throttle lever using a peice of wire. I took all of that mess out, and placed a good fitting rubber grommet back into the hole the box snaps into. I also moved the box backwards about 1/4" towards the firewall. This helped some, but it seems that 3rd gear is non existant. 3rd was barely there for a split second before I moved the adjuster box, but maybe not. It stays in first a good amount of time, 2nd, seems fine, then BAM drops into fourth. Is third gone? Or is it being skipped?

Did you make sure you adjusted the cable properly? A quick web search will provide the procedure for doing so. If I am reading your post correctly you have 3rd, but it is just extremely short?
This could be a number of issues from the cable not being adjusted to the governor. It sounds like the cable would be the best place to start.

TV cable adjustment is CRITICAL. You'll burn up that AOD rather quickly if you keep driving it this way. It still sounds like it's still out of adjustment. Search this forum or Google step by step instructions on how to do it.

I understand its a critical adjustment, but Ive had the is adjuster slider from one end to the other and all points between, and it still skips THIRD. I literaly made 20 trips around the block fracking with this thing...skips third. The only thing that was affected by the adjustments were the duration of 1/2 shift...to FOURTH. No third at any position. How could a new cable fix this? I dont think it would. I think there are bigger problems.

Please replace your cable and make sure you adjust it. You have no idea how old the cable is. They can stretch over time due to things like heat and the load placed on the cable itself. It sounds like someone already tried to band aid fix the problem with a wire. Replace the cable and make sure it's done properly.

And your sure it's properly connected at the tranny ?
When my cable broke off at the throttle, my tranny would short shift 1st and 2nd gear and then go right into 3rd by 20 mph, no matter how much throttle was applied. If I remember correctly, I thought it would not even go into overdrive, but this was a long time ago lol. Are you sure it's skipping 3rd and going into OD ?
I'm probably confused and I'm thinking of another car that had issues .....
