Default Odometer/speedo stopped working

I recently got my heater core replaced so the whole dash was taken apart. Not too long after getting it replaced, I went to fill up on gas and I reset my trip. I noticed that it stayed at zero and wouldn't move. Now the speedo isn't working either. I can't find a replacement odometer gear online and if the speedo gear needs to be replaced I'm not sure what gear to get because the previous owner doesn't know if there are 3.55s or 3.73s in the rear. I'm going to take the instrument panel apart and look at the gears and make sure they're greased.

You'll need to know your rear axle ratio in order to get the correct speedo gear for tranny. So I'd find that out first. I've bought mine from LMR and they do strip rather easily if there's any resistance in the cable or cluster.

Piece if cake to swap out though. Good luck

Right, can I figure out what replacement speedo gear for the tranny I need just by looking at the old one? Any idea what I should do with the odometer? Haven't had the opportunity to take it apart yet.

So just to clarify, the speedometer still worked while the odometer quit ? Then you'll need to take it apart to find out why. I've never done one, but heard it's not that bad to do.

I can't remember if they stopped at the same time but I'm pretty sure they did. When I get into the back of the instrument cluster I'm just hoping the gear that drives the odometer isn't stripped because I'm not sure how I'll get a replacement, maybe from a junkyard.

Ok, if they both stopped working at the same time, it's the nylon speedo gear in tranny. Easy fix....no need to take dash apart.

Okay, so since I don't really know if I have 3.55s or 3.73s would I be able to take it out, examine the color and amount of teeth, and then be able to determine the correct replacement?

I believe they are color coded.

But since you'll probably have the rear off the ground, just mark the driveshaft and put another mark on a tire. Count how many times the tire rotates to one rotation of the driveshaft.

3 1/2 rotations = 3:55

3 3/4 rotations = 3:73

Just nice to know the ratio for future reference.

Good luck

+1^ In fact, I like to multiply those numbers by ten just to make extra sure I didn't miscalculate. (10 turns of the wheel resulting in 35 or 37 driveshaft rotations)

Thanks guys, I will do the driveshaft/tire method. It's going to have to wait until probably next week though as I am replacing my crossmember and trans mount when the crossmember comes in the mail from LMR and then there's waiting for the replacement speedo gear in the mail as well.
