Default Starter won't stop

Hey everyone. I had an interesting problem with my 87 mustang. When I started the car the starter would not disengage. I turned the key off, put the car in gear and held the brake, let off the clutch and it would stop until I put my foot back on the clutch. Finally it quit on its own. I disconnected the battery and replaced the starter solenoid thinking it had shorted. That didn't work. It did the same thing and now the car has lost all electrical power. Nothing works. I checked fuses and battery connection and they all look good. Any advice on where to check next?

Ignition switch. Under dash, on steering column above your knees. Easy swap and a known problem area.

Just out of curiosity, what brand starter solenoid did you get ? I've had brand new, cheapo/import solenoids be bad from the start. You get what you pay for.......

Good luck and let us know elbow it turns out.

I didn't even look. There was a new one sitting in the back seat that was left by the previous owner who passed away. I'll check on that.

Okay, I finally replaced the ignition switch. It was definitely original and had the issue I've seen on YouTube where it separates. Unfortunately that didn't fix the problem. Still no electrical at all.

Check your fusible link. That major amp draw while the starter was going might have fried it. If it feels floppy, it's bad.
