I am new to domestic iron. So this is my first question. What is the difference between 87 to 93 and post 87 cars(stock)I know most cars older than 87 have carbs and cosmetic differences but what else. I ve heard that older 302's only made like 170 hp stock. I am asking cause pre 87 cars are cheaper and i like the 4 lamp look also a friend of mine told me to stay with 87 and later because of injection.

You can have best of both worlds my friend! Buy an 86. You get quad head lamps, and fuel injection which you can always convert to Mass air later. it's cheaper than finding an 88(CA)+ 89+ with Mass air and then getting an 85-86 front end to graft on, if that's what you really want.

so mass air is the reason older cars were short on power. What if i find an older gt with a carb and put some good heads and a good carb on it. will that make for the power difference between latermodel cars. What exactly does the term switching to mass air imply.

Sure you can make up for the power and driveability with good head intake and carb, but if on was to convert to mass air on an 86 you can mod all you want externally, and have a decent setup due to the higher compression ratio the 86s solely have. Until you start camming and adding 1.7 r rockers, then you need to get different pistons or have the stock ones reliefed cut.

the 86-88 cars have speed density to measure incoming air to tell the computer how much gas to inject into the engine. mass air is just another way of doing it. it does better with modifications. it is what ford switched to in 88. i would go with the carb car. i hate ecucrap and they are much easier to tune.

here is my plan. pick up an 86 or older up to 83 for 1000 to 500 bucks with a high milage motor. Put in a ford racing long block with edelbrock performer intake and carb. then work on the chasis and trans.

You deffently want to go with a 86 or later. Later on when it's time to start bolting on some upgrades, you'll be happy you got a 86 or newer.
