Default Operating Temp

I have the stock fan, radiator, and hoses, with a 2 week old thermo and March Performance series pullies. I went for a ride today and the fan kicked on while I was idleing, when it hit 188, could it have been a 2 time fluk? It happened to times in one day after it ha been shut off it did it again. Could it been the fan is going, so it is kicking on when it wants to and not always when it should? </P>

Oh yea and it only has 80k on it. </P><edited><editID>VicsGT</editID><editDate>37997.5502546296</editDate></edited>

you may have an electrical gremlin. something with the wiring in the efans. are your fans from a 6banger??? if so REPLACE THEM you need more cfm. or wire them together so they work at once. im runing svo fans and i ahve them wired to operate at the same time. since i dont have A/C i can run both 10inchers together at same time.

Nope, as far as I knowitis the stock GT fan. I was reading thru my Haynes manual to look into rear seal replacement, and I noticed that it said the stock 195 degree thermo opens between 188 and 195 part way, and then it opens fully at 220. I am guessing that means I didnt do any harm running 220 for that short bit, but that still doesnt explain why it didnt start cooling at 188ish?

your VSC could be getting ready to go out the door. the VSC is what turns on the fans. you can overide this by bypassing the vsc and operating the fans manually. viva switch. my ls15.3 runs at 210 that is normal for a daily driver. as far as the stangs your factory gauages arnt ACURATE!!!!!!

a few things here a stock stat will start to open any where from 190-195 and might not be fully open til well over 200..so go get a 180 mr gasket stat. the ofice is 1/8" bigger for more water, also you need to fix the fan to come on earlier, also buy a bottle on redline water wetter..

A bottle ON redline water wetter? a bottle of? The thermo is what tells the fan to come on earlier right so if I go to a 180 it should help, but even with the 195 at idle the fan isnt lowering the temp. I took it for a spin earlier, and if I idle for more than a minute the temp slow rises untill I start driving again., almost like the water pump is not turnig fast enough at idle due to the pullies.....I might switch back if I keep having problem, but that suck becuase I did notice a nice gain from them.

no the stat does not tell the electric fan to come on..also you fan just maybe really to small and the pulley has exposed this problem ..when it heats up do you turn of the heater? or is it already on?

I beilivetwo times the heat was on the whole time and1 time the heat was off. How can I adjust the fan to come on sooner? I was looking intoa black magic fan and they say they are adjustable from 180 to 240 (as when to turn on) so I guess me running at 220 wasnt killer?

i have the same problem, so i repleaced the radiator and the thermostat right off the start, it helped a lil bit, now it runs at half way, and at idle for a while it goes slightley past half but never more.... i used the watter wetter in my 65 tbird, it didnt make a difference, do any of you think that if i use it in the 5.0 it will make any change? and would it be even better to use 2 bottles?... next thing to do would be change the water pump and it dont look to easy...</P>

the fans come on viva VSC. the black magic isnt adjustable its the VSC. the VSC is what controls the fans to come on in relatioin to the Tstat. once the Tstat opens there is probes in the coolant[somewhere, without looking at one couldnt tell you exactly]then it goes to the VSC which then sends a signal to the relay the the fans turn on.
