straight cuts are loud, not as strong (not as much contact area), and just overall harsh gears. that's why i was wondering why the preference over the helical.

Hey guys Im looking into a new tranny also, Im going with the Tremec 3550 for my 89 GT daily driver. I had a question when I get that do I need a new bell housing, and also do I need to do any mods anywhere (crossmember, drivline, etc....)? Or is it a straight bolt in? Thanks>.......thought Id atake advantage on this string instead of starting a new one.

ALL Tremecs(3550, tko, tkoII)takes a different bellhousing, It has a different bolt pattern. it is the same bellhousing as a 79-82 mustang with the s-rod. You can buy it from where ever you get the tremec 3550 from for about 169.00$ or get a and explosion one that has both bolt patterns. The cross member will work, but you have to cut the welds and slide it back. The tremec will come with a stock type shifter, but if you have a nice short trhow it won't work, cause it is also different, I know all that stuff is differnt cause I just went through with it. happy trails, And if you choose to still buy it, you will be very happy with it, so much better that those junk t-5's

I rebuilt my t-5's in both my mustangs using the rebuild kit $159 and the super alloy gearset which makes the t-5 stronger you can get the 3.35 1st gear for $299 or the 2.95 1st for $499.Mine have held up well so far but i havent put on sticky tires yet so well see.Its nice to know how to rebuild them myself though.I used a magazine article. The procedure is probably on the internet somewhere. Its just an option you couldnt go wrong with a tremec or a performance automatic though I have heard that an automatic is more consistant at the track.
