cleveland and windsor

clevelands are definately big blocks and naturally windsors are small blocks. there is a lot of difference between the two. it depends on what you want to do with it and really for convience and parts availibility, windsor is the way to go. it bolts right in a fox body with the convertible mounts, you have to get a different oil pan and headers than a 302 and an intake. the 302 timing parts work on a windsor therefore you can use the 302ho firing order. a windsor should rev quicker (depends) than a cleveland and they both have good low end torque. cleveland heads are so big its almost overkill, transmission selection is limited to unless your not worried about the money part of it. nothing better than cubes, so why not have the same cubes(bore it .030 over to a 358, for a little extra), but in a smaller, lighter, higher reving block!

I dont know if the cleveland is a small block or not but here is what i know

351W

The Windsor engine builds this engine hence the name normally this isnt important but another engine the 351C for cleveland engine plant has the same displacement thats about all they have in common so here is the differences i know. The 351W is a beefier block than the 302 but has the same bore spacing (4.38")and bore diameter (4.00") so heads retrofit. A higher deck height requires a unique intake manifold. Main journals (3.00") are larger than 302 (2.25"). Camshafts interchange but the 351W has a different firing order (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8) vs. (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) for the 302 except the 1982 and later 302 HO which use the 351W firing order. The 351W has been used from 1969 to the current model year.

351C

The 351C entered the scene in 1970 and was produced until 1974.(one reason of the lack of parts)It has canted valves with multi-groove keepers, hydraulic cam, Pedestal-mounted rocker arms with "sled" fulcrum seats that are retained with cap bolts. Heads for 2V induction have "open" chambers with rounded ports, while 4V heads have "quench" combustion chamberswith with large rounded intake and exhaust ports. A 351C Cobra Jet appeared in 1971 with 4-bolt main caps, which was carried over in 1972 as the 351C-4V with open chamber heads.

There is also a difference in water passages Windsor and cleveland heads are physicaly interchangable but some mods are required to accomodate the different passages

All this info was from the 2004Ford Racing Performance Parts Cataloge

I also think that there is a difference in deck height which the 351C has a 9.200" deck height and the 351W has a 9.500 deck height

from my uncle because he knows all about the 351C and 351W because he runs low 10's with his '69 Mustang
