Hey all, just got a Lincoln Mark VII over the weekend. Its a 92 with the 5.0 HO motor. Drove it from Seattle to LA and it ran fine. Went to the mall yesterday, idled through a drive-thru restaurant and the car died. The idle was erratic, up and down - up and down. I got it started, it drove home with hesitation. Later, I started it again, ran better but not perfect. Then finally I started it later and tried to drive it. No matter how I pushed the gas, the car only went about 10 or 15 MPH, spitting and stuttering, I think I even heard a small backfire or "pop" from the motor. It also made a dieseling sound for a second, like the fakey sound cars make on TV when they run out of gas.

From my research on this board, looks like IAC and EGR are culprits. Can anyone back this up or have another suggestion? The engine light didn't come on, I'd like some opinions before I go spend the $200+ on new EGR and IAC. Lastly, is there a good place on the web for instructions how to replace these? Thanks all, Im now in the 5.0 world.

Can you get the car to run properly at cruise speeds? If not, the Iac or the egr is not the rpoblem. If this only happens at idle, than you are barking up the right tree. Need a little bit better description of what exactly it's doin'!

Just a suggestion, check all the phsycal connections under the hood, electrical, vaccuum hoses. Maybe something came loose on your long drive. Maybe something burned. Take the distributer cap off, maybe the rotor burned. Fuel pump too maybe? Fuel filter clogged up, that could be it. Just thinking and typing. Good luck man.

I replaced the IAC, it didn't fix it. Now the car barely starts, if it does the idle jumps to about 2000 like the computer is trying to keep it running. Then it boggs out, sputters, the check engine light flickers on and off, then dies unless I give it a ton of gas and then repeat. It smells like it's running rich while doing this, which being fuel injected is a weird smell for a car. All the connections seem to be in place. I have not checked the cap/rotor, or the fuel pump/filter. How do I check the pump/filter? Thanks

I guess if your car smells like it's running rich it's not the pump or filter. Check the distributor out see if everything is ok there.

Also I heard a couple "pops", like backfire? And like I said a quick dieseling sound once. So cap and rotor and/or plugs?

check the timing too, mayb e your distributor is loose
