I haven't mentioned this car because it doesn't have a motor or transmission right now, but I have a '91 notchback that has been fairly quick. It's best pass was a 9.76 at 137.something. It went a 6.22 at about 111 in the 1/8th on that pass. Here's what it had/has:
393 stroker, victor jr heads stage 2 ported by Bennett Racing, solid flat tappet cam with lift in the low 600's on the intake, around .580 on the exhaust. It was some kind of circle track cam, believe it or not. It was based on an early 351w block, with a scat crank, STOCK 351 rods (!), and a 302 piston of some sort. It was rounded out with a victor jr intake, 1000 hp carb, bbk long tube headers, and an edelbrock plate kit jetted for a 200 shot.
Chassis-wise, it has an 8 pt cage, welded in subframe connectors, 8.8 with a spool, aftermarket axles (I think 31 spline, not sure), wolf racecraft rear upper/lowers, granatelli front crossmember and strut setup, c clip eliminator kit, 4.10's in the 8.8.
Leaving on a 200 shot netted mid 1.3 short times, foot braking it. Oh, the transmission was a c4 with a shift kit and good clutches. No transbrake or manual valvebody. The trans would surprisingly last pretty well, at least 30 or 40 hard passes, before it would start the 3rd gear flare. The last time I had it benched the stock planetaries were getting kinda sticky, like they wanted to bind up. More stock used planetaries were put in it.
This engine would run fine on 93 octane on the motor. Some race gas mixed in was enough for the nitrous. I drove this car to and from the track, as well as around town sometimes. The power windows and locks still work in it, which is good since the rollcage bars would block the handles if it had manual windows.
The reason I'm vague on some technical details about the engine and rearend is because I didn't build the car or engine-I bought it already set up. The only stuff I did was put the suspension stuff on, have the 4.10's put in (in place of 3.55's) and get the heads ported.
The 393 started gradually losing oil pressure, so I sold it back to the guy I got the car from, minus the heads. Those I ebayed. I wish I had kept them-they might have been a decent choice for the cobra I have now. Now this is the part that's gonna piss some folks off-the reason I sold the engine instead of freshening it up is that I'm basically a chrysler guy at heart, so I'm gonna be putting a big block chrysler in the car. I have a ton of parts for them, and I know more about them than I do any other engine. The cobra of course will be staying with ford smallblock motivation.
