Yoke, Steel, 1350, Ford 8.8 in. Differential, 30-Spline,
Ring and Pinion Installation Kit, Ford, 8.8 in., 10-Bolt, 30-Spline Pinion, Kit
Differential Cover, Aluminum, Natural, Summit Logo, Bearing Cap Support, Ford, 8.8 in.,
This is what Im planning on getting, any thoughts would be great. I have stock engine next summer I will building the engine to about 450-500 hp. Should I invest in the 9in rear end or am I ok now? Thanks

There are some pretty fast cars running 8.8's. That thing should be pretty strong with those upgrades. If you are building 500hp engine you may want to do rear control arms while you are back there. You could pull the whole rear and rebuild it then bolt it back in with the new control arms.

The 8.8 Ford rear is almost a copy of the old Chevy 12 bolt. It it a strong differential. It needs welded tube and I would skip the C clip axles and useC clip eleminators. You may also wnt to put a girdle cover on it as well. It's cheap when you think about the alternative. My 9" Currie set me back 3000 dollars.

yeah weld up the tubes, if you are going through all the trouble IMHO it is HARD to beat a 9" positive axle retention (no c-clips, c-clip eliminators) you can easily change the differiantal/gear ratios with simple hand tools
8.8 is strong and wont break if set up with your hp levels but if you street drive many avoid c-clip elim. and get the 9" axle ends welded up that way you have the pos axle ret. but I say nuts to getting pieces of 9" rear at that point just get a 9" its not that expensive but its quite hard to break even 28 spline aftermarket axles are quite strong (esp removing the c-clips from equation)
I went simple on mine and got a used detriot locker and used 3.89:1 gears and moser housing I think it cost me about $770 or so?? maybe another $50 for seals and fluids etc see here:

oh yeah and I already had the third member. I traded a buddy an old AFB carb and duraspark dizzy + module for a used WAR 3rd member: housing/case/carrier, not the best or strongest (it is reported to be similar to std cases) but will hold up to my target 400hp build methinks... I understand that they are good under 500 ft/lb
You can get third members under $100, here is a quick search for used unit
Here is a 28 spline with 3.89 gears its $99 with two days left

$100 on craigslist

Yes it has 3.0 gears but the beauty is that you could choose to upgrade this with gears etc or simply get this 3.0:1 rebuilt and swap it in and out with a better one like a currie or strange or a for N case with 4.56 spool... you can switch back and forth for like a cruize or driving to a car show etc
and you can do it for around $1k - Complete - if you build your 'race' aftermarket 3rd member (4.56, spool etc) later
