How many times has it been painted? Damn thats a lot of miles... how were the torque boxes and rear axle? No wonder you became an expert on rebuilding the t5

i've rebuilt a couple t5's now, 2 t56's and i've looked at a lot of them too. lol.

TQ boxes looked fine, driver side lower looked like it was tearing away but i hammered it back into place and welded the seams shut. so im pretty sure it was a fairly unmolested car. its been in michigan its whole life, always sold and registered within the state, so thats why it had so much rust.

as for the paint it was fairly nasty lookin when it was pulled the first time but when it was being rebuilt it was stripped and hot tanked so it has a fresh coat on the block and pan. and when i rebuilt the top end the heads and valve covers were stripped and repainted. heres pics below when i tore down the top end for the second time.

since the whole motor is apart is there anything that should be replaced as a provision?

obviously new gaskets. the oil pan is being re gasketed since its leaking a little and the bottom of the pan is damaged by some jackass before me.

anything else i should look at getting? WP and timing cover will be new since im switching to a 3 pulley set-up. its getting a new H balancer since mine is wobbling just a tiny bit. everythign will be getting painted.

everything was rebuilt 4k miles ago but we did reuse some parts like the oil pump, oil pump shaft and stuff like that.
