California uses an ASE test standard for the most part, it's 95 dB measured at a 45 degree angle from the exhaust outlet at 18" I think revving in neutral at around 3,000rpm. Which is freakin LOUD. After an excessive # of modified exhaust tickets for years, SEMA sued the State of California and won, causing them to have to create a testing station for enforcement purposes(all the smog ref stations are noise testing stations now as well). The first year it was instituted it was found that over 90% of all "excessive exhaust noise" tickets were in fact, fraudulent.

This is the CHP's own bulletin on ticketing for modified exhaust.

The American Thunder catback with an offroad pipe is not quiet, when I ran that setup my car was actually quite loud. I swapped my stock H pipe on there one time and the exhaust almost sounded stock at idle, I could not believe the difference it made.

I live in a small town and, we just got some new cops in town and I got a no front licence plate ticket from a SHERIFF.

40% of cars here don't have front plates, and it was a corvette weekend, and no corvette has a front plate. BS

I think I got pulled over for having such a G-ride

Ive never gotten pulled over for exhaust, but i got warned about it whilst being pulled over for speeding ( not like, uber pissed warning, but, a "take it easy, your car is really loud") and i had pypes Violators with high flows, they are REALLY loud under WOT but pretty quiet down low and at idle

then again, cops around here like american cars
