Default 5.0 timing question

ok ive got a 88 ford f150 4*4 truck with a 5.0 that i got for a winter/dd heres my problem the guy i got it from put a new timing set in it and now when you get it started it has no power i can only get it up to 20mph at best ... when running it gets a strong smell of gas from the exhaust ... did he get the timing off or am i missing something ... he didnt put the timing pointer back on so i cant check it with a light any help would be great thanks in advance

i might not be much help.i just went through the whole timing thing with my car. besides the obvious with checking firing order or using a timing light (borrow a pointer off somebody.only two bolts.). if that doesn't work then get somebody to explain to you about watching which valve is doing what and the pointer in the distributer on the number one cylinder. i've only done it once so i won't b.s my way through it.someone on here can get more detailed. it'll give you something to search for.

if its fuel injected, make sure the spout connector is plugged in.

should be right near the distributor

well spout is still in so i guess ill try to time it later tonite with it out and see if that helps ... if that dont work guess ill tear it down and see if he messed up on the timing set ... any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

ok i dont get this thing rolled it to tdc restabbed the dizzy and it ran great ... then went back out to work on it some more put the fan, belt and fan shroud back on and went to start it and now it wont start again ... it fires and seems like it wants to but no go any help woould be great
