Default 1992 4 cyl to 5.0 conversion

Kinda new to the forum but not really new to mustangs. I recently picked up a 92 coupe in very good condition after I sold my other 92 coupe. I needed to get some things paid off and I was able to sell my 92 get most of the note I owed paid off and get a 4cyl out the deal.

Like I said the car is in great shape everything works minus the power door locks and there is minor body damage.

Plain and simple the 4cyl has to go. I have two 302s sitting at my house one that only missing a timing chain cover and one pushrod and another one thats just the heads, block, and an intake.

My last coupe had a whole list of mods which were done before I bought the car. Im going to be building this car on a very tight budget at least for the next two years but want to get the 5.0 dropped in.

The new 4 cyl car has an auto tranny which will go also. I have lots of ways to get my hands on a 5speed tranny and a good rear end with know how and friends who know how that will help me out. Im guessing that with my budget ill probably be able to get the car all converted over in the next two years.

So my question is what is the smartest way to start this project and with which motor. Do I rebuild the fuel injected 5.0, get a computer and wiring harness off a donor car, or do I go with a carb? My biggest concern is getting the new motor in the car, then tranny, then rearend. Or maybe all at once and just drive the ole car around while it sips gas and I save money.

Sorry for the book and all the clutter. Any advice and comments are welcome. Thanks.

-Sam

I'd drive the 4cyl until you're ready to go with parts. You're gonna need alot, either way you go.
I'm personally going carb, so i'm buying a new tank, installing a sump into it, mounting a new Holley pump behind the tank, gotta change all the fuel lines, trunk mount battery, i removed all the EFI wiring, hid the body wiring harness into the fender, relocated the starter solenoid into the fender, etc etc the list goes on and on for ****in ever.

I would MUCH rather be doing everything over the course of a week, then piece by piece over 2 years like I am now.

Anyway, you probably already know about the drivetrain. Everything you plan to do, 302/351, T5 or similar, and an 8.8 rear, are all direct bolt ins. Swapping out pedal assemblies for a standard is going to be the most difficult part of this, in my eyes. It doesn't just pop out. The entire dashboard and bracketry, down to the last rivet, must be taken out.

I wouldn't even consider this 4cyl car but it is in practically perfect condition. One of my good friends have done a 4cyl conversion twice in the past 5 years. I believe it will be fine. Plus you couldn't find a 5.0 this clean this cheap. Ive already got parts laying around that need to get out the way anyway.

Well you already know something about the cars but let me start off by saying this, espcially since you are talking about a budget.
The 3 things that alot of people tell others they need to do the swap are an 8.8, k member, and the whole front suspension and brake setup.
To get the car to run and drive you DO NOT NEED ANY OF THAT. The k member is pointless really, the 8.8 is just for a stronger rear if you go and beat on it (not going to be a problem with light track duty on street tires, and the brakes suck yes but they still work fine if properly maintained. I have beat the hell out of my 83 that has the stock 7.5 rear and smaller front brake setup and have had no issues.

My 2 cents, take your time, put the motor right the first time and have it all ready to drop in at one time. I am prolly one of the lowest budgeted guys building a car on here so believe me doing it right the first time is a must lol.
