Exclamation Wont go above 4k rpms???

I have a 1994 gt, it idels really well, and runs okay, but when i try to step on the gas hard it gets all choked up and will not go passed around 4000 rpms. i was wondering what you guys thoughts were on this problem? what could it be/ what could i look for? Thanks

so "if" i disconnected the exhaust, and maybe drove the car up the road and back i would be able to tell?

like it skips and wont go any higher, i was thinking maybe distributor or fuel pump but i really dont know.

It sounds like an electrical problem (distributor)to me at the first guess. Have you run any codes on the car?
