So I have had a 3.73 ring and pinion gear set sitting in a box for quite a while and my Dad and me finally got around to installing them. I took pictures along the way because it is a really cool operation I think. WOW what a difference these things make! enjoy the pics
This was really neat. This is what you do to determine the shim size to put between the pinion gear and bearing. that back part is a little arm and you put it where the pinion gear goes and torque it down to 20 in-lbs. Then you bolt this cylinder up where the carrier goes and slide different width shims between the two and feel for the right amount of resistance. We used .19
We heated this ring gear up for about an hour in a toaster oven that is kept in the diesel shop for just such occasions lol. We did this so that it would expand and we wouldnt have to beat it on with a rubber hammer. it worked great.

That 800 dollar OEM FORD tool for determining pinion shim is a waste of money, yeah that's right I bought one, have it and everytime you stick it in your housing it will always tell you to use the same shim, in your case .019, however, what that tool doesn't account for is inconsistancies in pinion and ring gear machining., I set that tool up in my housing and it said .020 however, to get the correct pattern so no noise would occur .027 had to be used on a ford racing set and on another set I did .030 had to be used on a 4.10 set up and the tool always said to use the same .020 shim in the housings waste of my hard earned money, the most useful tool was the shim driver that came with the kit

Thats odd that it would do that. My Fasha has used it for many a rebuilt rear ends They belong to the Ford dealer that he works at. He's been in the game for 28 years and still goin strong. Now he oversees the new guys that come to work for Kehoe fresh from LSTC in Linn MO. They come to him with probs and questions and such.

think about it, everytime you set that tool up in that particular housing it will always tell you it needs a .019 shim as long as the bearings are consistant but what if there are inconsistancies in the machined surface where the pinion shim is placed on the pinion??? uh huh trust me been there, no two pinion head surfaces are machined the same, expecially between lets say, Richmond, Ford Racing and Motive gears, been through it plenty of times, I leave the tool in the box and read the patterns now and use a dial indicator for back lash

I hear what your sayin and yes it makes sense to me. Alls I know is that I had a good day wit meh dad. And, I learned how to rebuild a rear end! If it wines, well pull it out and try again.
I get ya' good deal!!! all I'm saying is I'm upset with my MAC tool man who sold me on the tool, who BTW was a ex ford tech of 25 years, and once I got the tool and understood the theroy behind what it was doing and not accounting for, I was kind of upset with having spent 800 for the TOOL.
