Your parameters - stock bottom end,GT40's(or40x's), and a decent intake(at least a gt40/cobra style or a performer - keep it in the idle-6000 range)
This cam has proven its worth with quick acceleration, a broad torque curve and valvetrain stability(read as durability).Concentrate more on valve seat timing(creating cylinder pressure, which equals torque and better acceleration rate). Need to keep duration mild for low end and mid range throttle response to keep it FUN to drive while coming out of the corners in the twists and turns.
Erson has a well proven cam similar to the Steeda #19 in my car.
ERSON # E212837 2300-5800 rpm range 218' int/ 226' exh. 110' LSA /.544 lift.
allows you to turn 6000-6200 with no issue, while keeping good low end torque . Responsive and hard charging is the way this cam runs. I have three customers with this cam, and it does what it sounds like you are looking for.

honestly all you really need is gears, some suspension work, sub frames, short shifter, exhaust and some timing adjustments and you will be more than happy for now.

thats what i did when i bought my car then 2 years later i built the motor up some.

oh and btw those of you who say nitrous is inexpensive its really not. i got my kit used from adder and have since bought several accessories that i needed (bottle gauge, blow down tube, automatic bottle heater, fittings) prob about $600 deep. plus its $50 a fill up.
i figured that while rebuilding the rear i might as well just upgrade axles. ive been thinking about just a rebuild also after i found out that that frpp differential was basically a stock one. i thought it was an upgrade. i know im doing all of the things you suggested. i dont know, maybe i will just keep the engine stock for now and just replace it for the 331 im going to have mike dez at dez racing build for me in a few years.
