Default 88 5.0 Carb getting horrible gas mileage!!!!

Hey guys I just built an 88 coupe 5.0 HO with a 600 Carb, I'm getting about 8 miles to the gallon, there for I can go about 100 miles on a tank. WTF is the problem, there doesnt seem like this is right at all. My gas gauge doesnt work correctly, when I fill it up, the gauge goes up, I know when it is almost empty because the gauge goes all the way down, could my gauge maybe finally went all the way out? Also my timing is a little off just havent had it adjusted yet, could this be eating all of my gas? Any help would be greatly appreciated, also can anyone else tell me what you are getting to a gallon with the similar setup? Thanks

Something is wrong. Either the gauge and/or sender are shot, you have a fuel leak, or you're jetted WAY rich.

My little 302 is not stock and I'm getting about 25 highway.

thanks for the response, I will look into the things you mentioned. I don't think that there is anyway possible that this is right....

Check tire pressure. It can rob you of a few mph if it's too low.

A few things you must confirm first. Is the odometer reading correctly and how many gallons to drive a certain distance.

Personally I know when I screw together a new combination. I'm getting about half the mileage, just due to the grin factor.

Mileage should not even be measured unless you are driving to get maximum mileage. So if you take the car for a 10 mile cruise and run it WOT through the gears a couple times. your average MPG takes such a dump, it's not even worth measuring against.

On carbed applications. Some easy things to check are for blown power valves and you should run vacuum advance on the distributor.
