Question what gears should i use?

i have a 347 stroker with a t56 trans and am wanting to swap to a different rear gear like a 4.10, or 3.73. i have no idea what the stang tops out at now, but i would like to hit around 160-170 top speed. so far ive hit 5000rpms in 5th gear at 165 via GPS, then ran out of road... anyone have any suggestions as to what i should use? i have a 3.08 rear end at the moment.

Pointless. You'll never get that car to go that fast even on a racetrack, unless you fly it half way around the world to run it at the Nurburgring or something.

Gear it to give best performance in whatever you're going to use it for.

I have 4:10 gears in my 87 gt with few mods such as cold air bigger tb and underdrive pulleys. My car is just a weekend toy, i dont even race it. This gear is great for 1/4 04 1/8 mile runs but has no top end. I would say the 3:08 or even the 2:73 is way better for top end if thats what you want. I personally like going fast through the 1/4 mile than going 160mph my self.

With the .8 5th in a T56 and a 26" tire you prolly wouldn't hit max speed in gear on most race tracks. And depending on the gear ratio set you may be shifting all the time.

Again, pick a gear that provides the best performance for intended usage.

And honestly, so you don't kill yourself....if you had a car and proper driving skill to go at speeds that high, you wouldn't need to ask what gear you needed. You really need to reevaluate your decision before you cripple or kill yourself or someone else.

then a 2.73 would have you doing 165 at about 4750
4.10's it'd take about 6k to reach 165

fair enough, let me put it another way... i want to be able to hit 6th gear in 1/4 and still have the ability to drive on the interstate without killing what little gas mileage i get. note that my car bogs down at 1,000 rpms at 65mph in 6th. i know that i cant have my cake and eat it too, but i would like to at least get closer to the goal.

There is not point in aiming for 6th gear in the quarter. The T56 was designed for 4 speeds for drag racing and 5th and 6th for low rpm highway cruising.

Gear it for max rpm in 4rth through the traps.

If you have the 2.6 first gear T56. It will not be happy with a tall rear like 3.08. You need more gear, especially if you are N/A.
