Set the timing at 14 degrees. Remove the air filter silencer. Install a set of underdrive pullys and install a quality electric fan. You could throw on a set of 1.7 roller rockers. This would be a good starting point.

forget about the engine for now. to be worth anything you need to do heads,intake and cam
or a power adder... im partial to nitrous over the blower
but if the car is stockish you can gain more from gears and a good tire. it will take 100 hp to gain the same
do 4.10's and get some et streets.. radial or bias ply your choice... if you have radial front tires do radials.. but if you go with a bias ply front runner... do the bias ply rears as well... if you mix them up... you handle for $h!t
a fox from 1988 is capable of going mid to low 13's on all stock and 4.10's with a sticky tire. my '89 went 13.20 that way but also long tubes and southside bars
dont fear the gear and dont waste money parts that wont do anything for you right now.
an intake swap on stock heads.....you wont even notice it. 5 hp about at max
