ring and pinion choices for a gt vert
Ok so i have a 94 gt (5.0litre) vert, and im tired of it being dog **** slow.
i would love to have a s/c or t/c but im not going that route anytime soon. so im going to do some n/a building and try and get what i want from there. I just recently put new wheels on her (9" black bullets in the front, 10.5" in the back) mainly b/c i hated the stockers and found these cheap. I have an after market CAI on and im doing a MSD tune up this weekend (distributor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, etc. So the next step is a rear gear (ring and pinion) change. Im not too familiar with them or mustangs for that matter, and was wanting some honest feedback, im looking at doing a 4.10/4.30 (on an auto)
i heard from some that the auto will not get as much out of the 4.10 as a 5-speed, and itwould be more like a 3.73...true??
and also is such a steep gear ok for an auto b/c i read on here that 4.10 woul be better for an auto and 3.55/3.73 would be for an automatic.
im just basically looking for a "out of the hole" beast and something that will show good throttle response, and couldnt care less about that slight change in mpg. and i know that its not going to kill my top end since its heavy and gets drag with, i have a group of ppl telling me that if i go 4.10/4.30 that my top end will be 100mph or less. which is wrong.
so which is better for the auto a higher (3.73) or lower (4.10/4.30)???

anyone who tells you NOT to go 4.10 is just an idiot
4.30 would be a bit steep for a street car, but if you dont see a lot of hiway time you might consider it. the biggest problem is correcting an aod. the drive gear is a machined part of the output shaft. it is 8 tooth, and cannot be changed without complete disassembly of the trans. so you can correct an aod trans to 3.27 gears with a 21t ford driven gear or to 3.55 with the non ford jeep part (the white 23t) but it will chew up due to the pitch being being way wrong... still wrong on a t5 but better
anyways... to dispell some 4.10 myths....
you will tach 3000 rpm at about 75-80, not 65-70 like some will tell you, thats assuming you have a stock size tire like about 26" tall
you will not have to shift into od, aod's wont anyways... but some will tell you that you'll run out of gear. you will in fact trap at about 100 mph and roughly 5000 rpms on a stockish motor
3.73 is absolutely NOT ENUFF IN A AOD, really not enuff in a 5 speed either imo, let alone a aod vert. i had 3.73 on my '90 vert aod lx, it went 15.10 on street tires, perked up to a 13.60 on a 100 shot though all stock and 3.73
i use 4.10's in my 5 speed cars... will use no less for gear EVER

If it A 5 speed 3.73 .If it's autimatic 4.10 .Final answer.Everone has a preference on this issue.I had 4.10's hated them .Always looking for another gear but that's my opinion.I know i'd never go back to 4.10 in a fox 5.0.The new model Mustangs 2005 and up will work great with the 4.10 or even 4.30 since the tires are about taller.
