Default stolen Stang recovered! after 8 1/2 years

Folks-
my original-owned 1990 5.0 hatchback was stolen on June 3rd 2002. I got a letter last Friday night that the car had been recovered! unbelieveable. I went to the tow yard Saturday and saw that the dash was destroyed, the seats torn up, different (non airbag) steering wheel, broken windshield. The car stinks because it had water in it from the broken winshield.
When it was stolen, it had just over 100K miles. Now the odometer shows 50K - so the crooks over 8 1/2 years drove it about fifty thousand miles - presumably in round trips from the drug market in West Oakland to the pimp-strip in East Oakland.
Let's assume they weren't doing regular meticulous maintenance as I had done for the 12 years before it was jacked...
It will cost me $685 to get the car back from the tow yard, or they have told me if I sign over the title they won't charge me anything to dispose of the car.
I have no garage, own 3 other cars, and since it was stolen I now have 3 kids and no time.
My question - what is the car worth as salvage? In particular here in the California Bay area? Every day the storage charge goes up by about $100.

Amazing story that it was even recovered. I guess the real question is how sentimental the car is to you. Sounds like it is in pretty rough shape and that you don't have much time to spend on it. On the other hand, how many people have a car stolen that shows back up almost 10 years later?

Default more info on car...

If anyone has CARFAX access, I'd be interested to see what they know about my car. The VIN is 1FACP41E9LF168673
I was very sentimental about the car when I owned it and when it was stolen - but now with so much changed in my life, the prospect of pouring a lot of money into it just so I could stand to sit in it sounds pretty unappealing. I'm really tyring to figure out if I could come out ahead paying the storage fee and reselling it, or just turning over the title to the tow yard vultures.

Scrap price, it is not worth 685 around here. The highest I have seen lately is 9 dollars a hundred. I have heard about 14 a hundred in larger cities around here. Scrap prices seem to increase with gas prices from what I have seen.

If you cut the cats off the car, I still don't see you breaking even. If the car has a 5 speed and and the motor is in great shape, you could make a little but, you would have to work to do that and still have to hall it off to the scrap yard when you are done getting what you can sell off of it.

Chances are a car fax won't show anything because wouldn't it have to be registered and accidents or whatever be reported? Since it was stolen I doubt either of those were done.

Did you get any insurance money when your Mustang was stolen? They are right its not worth the $695
