408w or not? That is the ?
Hi guys me again . Since i have my block out for repair lol i decided to open her up and see if i actually got what was said. I purchased this motor used and i personally hear it run. Sounded mean if i do say so myself. Heres the thing after i bought it, it sat for while say 4-6 months. Went to change electric water pumps but ended up breaking a chunk of casting off. So now i took it apart to see the parts in it.
I've attached some of the pics. I was hoping some of you guys can tell me anything.
Motor is said to be 408w. Can you guys tell by the pics if the crank is a stroker? I can see its been clearanced in spots. On the pistons i can see a trw.
I'm new to performance world and its a steep learning curve lol. Also was told motor should have 450 hp. ur guys opinion.
Heads are edelbrock performer rpm . I'm going to degree cam soon as i get my kit to see what the cam is or at least what lift its running. Is there a part number on the cam under the gear?

Can't tell much of anything from that picture.
You need to get a dial indicator to measure the lift of the cam.
A set of calipers will help you measure the stroke.
An inside micrometer will get a good measurement of the bore size.
Get some better pics up......

well it is not a 408 with a 4in stroke crank not using a stock rod . But it could be a 393 kit that kit uses a stock 351 rod and a stock 302 piston but 393 to 408 with just bore that is getting out there. if you get a part number off the pistons and it is a 302 piston then you are looking at a 393. other then that it does look stock looking the numbers on the crank look stockish. I do see a slug of heavy metal in the crank so some one has spent $$ on balancing. also in that pics. do I see a faint stamp of a Ford oval? Not that the 393 crank cant have a Ford oval as they did sell the 393 cranks through Ford Racing for awhile even though they were cast by Scat they could have been stamped Ford. But in the end I am think it is just a stock crank and is a 351.

ahh not what i wanted to hear. But thx for the replies guys.Adder you meantioned get rid of the gear drive. Any pecticular reason? What you recommend? Double roller chain?
Uedlose where would i find the part number for the pistons? On the bottom of it. I can make out a trw on it. I'll go back in and look again. Looks like i'm going for a drive to find this **** lol. Though i didn't pay much. Paid 2 g's

no the front counter weight on the crankshaft there should be 3m or 3c or 3ma cast into the factory crank if you have them then it is a stock crank if not then it could be a stroker also. is there a part number stamped on the top of the piston? if not you might have to pull it apart to look still no guarantee there is a pt#. another thing I did see looking at the pics. again is the fact that it has been clearanced for the rod bolts you don't need to do that with a stock stroke crank I see this in pic. number 6 at the bottom of the bore.

thx you so much guys for the help and advice.
"Adder" I'll be definately looking into getting a double roller timing chain setup. Thx for the tip. I did not know it would send that much vibration.
I'm going to go back in and look at the counter weights and see if i can see any stampings or part numbers. I did noticed it has been clearanced in different spots.
I'll see if i can pull a part number off the top of the piston with my boroscope otherwise off with the heads lol.
