Best build year for street/strip?
Hello,
I was wondering what is the best year for a build (1979-1985) or (1986-1993)? Carb vs. fuel injected? Automatic vs. standard.
Please help, would like to start project and don't know what would be best route to go.

That would depend on your taste and your goals. The 89-92's are easier to modify, at least to a point, because they came with mass air (so did the 93's, but they did not come with forged pistons, though if it needs rebuilt anyway, it won't matter). If you're going hog wild, it doesn't make much difference on any of the years. Better transmission and roller cam started in 85. Better block, rear axle, fuel injection and brakes started in 86.

^ the better brakes did not arrive until 87 and I believe only on the gt models, I know the 4 cylinder models for sure retained the 10 inch brakes. It wasn't a huge upgrade but it does allow you to use svo calipers that have a much larger bore piston.
Transmission also depends on your intentions. Automatics are liked more for drag racing due to their consistency. Manuals are normally better liked for street because you can ensure you are in the best gear for the changing situations.

Thanks for the info. I have access to a 82 notchback that needs a motor. I have a 351W that needs to be rebuilt. Was thinking that route, but I do like the idea of fuel injection instead of temperamental carbs.

Get yourself a 79-82 notch....which you have.....They are the lightest fox body mustang. BUT you MUST at least get full length subframe connectors installed. All fox bodies need them and the older the car, the weaker the metal and there is less metal in the body for a "safer" crash body.
You can run fuel injection on any of the cars with very little work. Use the 351 and a c4 with some minor mods. Then pick up a 8.8 rear with some gears, springs, lower control arms, and throw on some slicks and you will have a mid 12 second car EASILY
