should i only use distill water when adding new coolant and water to my 86 5.0. and whats best coolant for it

Just tap water.....any is fine, buy the pure and dilute it yourself

I buy store brand universal 100% coolant. It's never in my engine more than 3000 miles anyway...

They say tap has a lot of contaminants that can erode your cooling system so purified is better. But, I've ran tap before

Not everywhere has the same 'tap water'.
In many parts of the western U.S. local water is very hard and will to eaten up aluminum intakes.
I always use distilled water with my coolant.......

tap water, 40 percent prestone green antifreeze, 60 percent water if you live in the south and i run a 12 ounce bottle of flexalite coolant additive that controls corrosion and electrolyisis that eats aluminum.
