Default 91 2.3 to 5.0 swap

Greetings all,

I'm a life long Ford diesel guy that finally figured I have to have to have a 1991 LX Coupe. I'm looking for a winter project to keep me occupied while it's cold. My question is, if I can find a sweet deal on a 2.3l, how much work is involved in the swap? Tranny, full drive train, rear diff? Is anything in the 2.3l reusable with a 5.0l?

Thanks

I've done it once, and would not repeat it. The K member, radiator, and fuel pump are the same; virtually everything else is different, including things like the front and rear brakes, brake lines, fuel lines, full suspension, engine sensors, and under hood wiring, to name a few. Here's a link I wrote on the effort a while back when I did it. http://mr5oh.tripod.com/4to8.html

I did this with my car and I agree, wouldn't repeat it. Very involved process.

Don't let those guys scare you....the brakes, rear end, and suspension do not have to be changed. Eventually I would yes but are not needed to make it work.

The wiring is only 3 harnesses....hardest part about that is getting it through the passenger firewall with the HVAC box still in the car.....just need some little hands and patience.

BUT for some of the swap...if you put the 8.8 rear under it you will have to do a little fabbing with the brake line..the 7.5 line runs to the passenger side while the 8.8 connects at the center.

As for the sensors and what you would need, read my post (carb to EFI swap but it will still help)
https://mustangforums.com/forum/5-0l...-write-up.html

The only interior piece, if I remember right, you need to change is the tach or the whole cluster to a 5.0 one. If you had a 4 eyed stang you wouldn't have to though, they just had a **** on the cluster you could choose 4,6,8 cyl to make it work lol.

The fuel lines have to be changed because the 4 banger lines come up on the driver side while the 5.0 lines come up on the passenger side.

Just take your time, make a list of what you will need, collect those pieces, and when you have everything do the swap.

But for the brakes, suspension, rear end I would wait till you decide to upgrade stock pieces and go from there....for the front though, you will need 5.0 spindles before you can put 5.0 brakes and struts.....

If you plan on going to a 5 lug setup then all that doesn't matter as much depending on how you go about it.

reldla's writeup seem to be pretty decent but there are a few things that are not exactly accurate....

I'm doing the same thing too. But my 5.0 came out of a '97 Explorer with the GT40p heads. It has 293k on it :/ but the entire explorer was only $100 Is there anything i should know about this motor? I noticed it has coil packs. But does that mean i can't put a distributor in it? Also I'm keeping my '93 fuel injected So what should i exspect? Thanks guys
