Default Explorer intake swap in my 87 5.0

Hello all!

I'm the guy with the 66 mustang with an 87 5.0 engine in it and no idea what i'm doing . But i'm very good at reading and i have some wrench turning friends that will help me along the way. I wanted to do some read ahead for a project that i'm looking at doing. I want to port and drop in an Explorer intake.

Based on this thread.....

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/614.shtml

It seems pretty straight forward. I'm going to throw in a little of this

http://www.veryuseful.com/mustang/te...akePorting.pdf

And see where that gets me. It appears as thought the Explorer intake is VERY good, but still not as good as the $450 top of the line aftermarket intake. I have a few questions that i pose to you all to help me avoid some painfull mistakes. Here goes!

1. Based on this link

http://www.ronmorrisperformance.com/06tech/index.html

I'm guessing i need to look at a 1995 to 1997 1/4 explorer as they have GT40 heads instead of GT40P heads which i'm told cause some problems.

2. Dumb questions but porting is only done on the lower intake and not the upper correct?

3. Has anybody done this on an 87 5.0 and are there any other modifications that need to be made? It looks like for the most part i just swap out sensors and bolt it right on.

4. Is there any other guides out there other than the two i've found?

Thanks for the help all!!!!!!!!

Are you wanting to use the GT40 heads also, sounds like you just want an intake swap.
The lower on the explorer is where the restriction is, especially in the front two runners.
You can port the upper but not beneficial if it is a 302-306 and not a stroker.
Be aware, there are 2 different styles of explorer intakes, one with internal EGR passage and one without depending on what year explorer it came from.
Check out this link for intake differences and gt40p head info

OP, The P heads are not THAT much of an issue. The issue with them is obviously the spark plug angle so the normal 5.0 plug wires tend to get burned by the headers. BC of this there are a couple P head specific headers that people do not want to spend the money on.

As for the intake. Other than rerouting a couple vacuum lines the only modification you will have to look into is the ACT sensor. You can either drill and tap the boss on the lower intake by the #5 cylinder OR relocate the sensor to the intake tubing somewhere. With your knowledge I would not worry about porting the intake and just leaving it as is.
