What speedo gear do I need?
Hey all, Im new to the 5.0 scene and have a 95 5.0 5speed with 3.73 rear end gear. The guy before installed the gears and did not fix the speedo. I noticed that crusing the interstate this weekend that with the flow of traffic (65 to 70) I was seeing 85 or so on the speedo. Miles rack up quick too. I did a search and didnt see my answer so was wondering if you guys would throw a newbie a bone here. Thanks.

Tire size will have an affect on your speedo, slightly.
I'm using these gears, at 102 mph my speedometer matched my GPS exactly.

No, not at a parts store. The red gear is meant for the end of the speedometer cable, which is the easy fix that most go for. The more precise way to do it is to change both the drive gear(yellow) and the driven gear(red). The yellow gear goes inside the transmission itself. Very simple to do.

lol..... the tailshaft has to be separated from the case, which means the the top cover has to come off, which means the trans needs to be removed. im just saying...anytime a R&R of the trans comes into i would definitely not call it simple.
but yes the 21/7 t combo is correct. personally i would do a 6t/18t combo just because the lesser tooth count make the gears stronger, and less chance of wearing out.
fyi your '95 T5 (assuming it IS a T5, and if it isnt, the output shaft needs to be replaced because the drive gear is part of it...not c-clipped to it) has an 8t and you cannot correct for 3.73 that way.
only 3.27's with the ford 21t gear, or 3.55 with the jeep 23t
