Default How to achieve 400hp?

My project will be starting very soon and I'm very excited! I have the car and I have the funds but I do not have the knowledge yet. I'm in my research phase right now. This is my 3rd project car in the last 15 years or so and I'm going to try not to make the same mistakes as I did in the past. I want to have a plan for everything before on start on any aspect of the car. I will be having the drivetrain professionally built by a shop in Tucson Arizona but I'm not exactly sure how to get my desired results. I want 400 FWHP out of the 302. I was looking at the trickflow top end kit but that says 360hp. I was thinking I could just slap a procharger on top of that and call it a day. After looking at the price tags I thought I'd ask you guys. haha Is there a streetable heads/cam/inake etc. combo to get 400hp out of the 302? If so can the block, trans and rear handle it? Any advise is welcome.

Thanks!

You can get 400 hp out of a 302, at the crank, with bolt-ons and good H/C/I set up. Someone may jump in here and share their setup, block will be fine, tranny? Auto or T5? Neither like to be abused but if treated with respect will hold. AOD is a power robber, and don't speed shift the T5. Rearend depends on your goals. Street car on street tires you'll be fine. 5000rpm launches on slicks you'll be trailering it home.

Sorry it has the T5. Honestly if it ever sees the track it will be on street tires.

I dont think it will even see the track to be honest. If it does it will be on street tires.

Is the trickflow hit worth the money or is there better ways to go about getting that kind of horse power?

If you're having an engine built, it's a lot easier to hit 400hp from a stroked 302, e.g. 347, and the price difference isn't much. 400 hp from a 302 will require decent heads, your choice whether TF, Edelbrock, or AFR - not a big difference between them, and probably in the 185 (intake port) range.

You could probably install a blower or turbo on what you have and reach your goals. But the more the motor flows(intake, heads, exhaust) the happier you'll be.

I've had a few boosted cars and I loved them dont get me wrong....but I'd like to keep this one NA if I can.

right now I'm looking at a TF H/C/I setup that I found on Summitt. It looks like it comes with damn near everything I need to make 360hp. I'm sure I can come up with a few ways to squeeze 40 more HP out of it.

Another question.....With 127,000 miles should I look at a complete rebuild when I have the top end kit installed? Rings and bearing and whatever else?

After doing a good amount of research and calling around I think 340hp is more what I'm looking for. 400 is really a long shot.

Probably a smart decision, 400hp breaks stuff faster. Since you'll be on street tires, you'll still have plenty of fun, and a 12sec. car if you do take it to a track with sticky tires.

If you have that many miles on it I would recommend a complete rebuild to include total re-machining and balance of the rotating assembly.
349RWHP is not totally out of reason, it's just going to cost some money...
I would also recommend using a C-4 trans with whatever convertor is needed.
