Please help me to diagnose EGR valve
Hi,
Recently my car started to show CHECK ENGINE so I've checked computer and it says that the EGR valve is not opening. After that, sometimes, mostly when engine is cold, it backfires through intake during slow accelerations.
I've seen forums people delete it but I don't want to do it, I want to fix it. I've seen some web sites how to diagnose it. They say you have to disconnect a vacuum line from the EGR, start engine, apply vacuum manually and see what happens. If it will rough or stop then this means that the EGR is good and I have a vacuum leak somewhere. But in my case, nothing changes, engine just idles but I see how the valve is moving when I'm doing it.
Does it means that my EGR valve is bad?
thanks!

Man, I wish I could help you. I'm one of those that deleted it and the car ended up running better. I imagine it is partly due to a malfunctioning EGR component somewhere in the system.
My car (1987) doesn't have a check engine light, so the choice was a no brainer. Delete it for a few bucks, or fight with tracking down the problem and throwing parts at it for who knows how long, and for who knows how much money.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.
