Default 2000 mile trip with almost no problems

Took my '91 Mustang on 2000 mile trip though the deserts from So Cal to
Idaho near West Yellowstone.

Hit a skunk one mile from home.. smell lasted two days... radio crapped out
before leaving town... was a short on the power wire that I fixed the next day.

Did not use any oil or coolant got 22-23 mpg with lots of the trip at speed limit
(Utah) at 80 mph... so I was going a little more than that....

Car got to the 3/4 temp mark on the gauge near Las Vegas in the early PM and
it was 109F at Barstow... when not climbing the hills it ran at half or less on
the gauge... even though it is a convertible... the AC kept it pretty comfortable.

Do have to get the top seals installed! Lots of road/wind noise due to the gap
in the upper seal above the windows..

Will now change out the discolored headlights as they do not provide enough
light to see easily at night. All else worked out fine... car has 63K on it... and
it will make a good daily driver for someone when I sell it soon...

I used to live in UTAH and never once did I encounter a 80 mph speed limit, heck RT 80 that dropped down out of WY into Utah had a max of 75mph.........I think those headlights that need buffing didn't shine enough light on the speed limit signs for you...lol

Default Most of 15 in Utah is 80 mph

mjr46 - Guess you need to go back to Utah for a visit...

Am getting new Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 Crew Cab with 6'4" bed and shell... will
be selling off my old F150 and the Mustang for more room and less working on
vehicles.

Was going to give the Mustang to Granddaughter for her first car but my Son in giving her his old Acadia - to be "safer". What is better than a blonde girl from CA in a red convertible?

Sounds like a good trip to me overall! Since I'm an audio guy I would have been pissed off to the max about a radio problem. I take great pride in my aftermarket harness work and have had NO failures in over 10 vehicles in 20 years.

Otherwise, right on!

I used to roll my '91 out on frequent 500 mile weekend road trips. It was literally a therapist with a clutch... I need to do that more.

After a couple of days at home...AC quit. Found out there was a bad hose and it was converted to R134. Very cold air now....

Will put on the top seals and get the new seat covers... will let the next owner get the new paint.

Thumbs up Fixed oil leak - clogged Emission Filter (PCV filter)

After reading the posts on this Forum... I decided to chase down leaks on
the RH side.

Others have had a clogged filter under the PCV valve... metal thing full of
steel wool type material...if clogged it creates additional pressure that
blows oil out the gaskets.

Mine was totally clogged... the PCV valve on the 5.0 is so well hidden I am
sure many do not service it... especially the filter underneath.. I got it
out by sticking a hooked pick inside and pulling upward. Available in the Help
section as most auto stores as a Dorman 47064 for under $6.00. I changed
the PCV valve and grommet as they were overdue as well.

Put two cans of engine cleaner on it and sprayed it all off... will check over the
next few days for any oil leaks.... never showed on the dipstick... only on the
concrete driveway.

Slowly fixing up all the little things that are wrong before selling to the next person.

Top seals will be next as I have them as well as a brand new convertible top headliner that came with the car that is still in a box!

Good find on that pcv pre-screen. Has it slowed the leak at all? If not, it's still good to know that's it's doing its job again.

Talking No oil on driveway now! Plus, it starts right up faster

Not only has the oil leak stopped... but it starts up very quickly after replacing the screen filter and PCV valve (it was free before but I changed it anyway and the grommet)? At the VERY first turn of the key.... does not make any sense = just a fact....
