The 91 I am getting has maybe a 6-8 inch rip in it. Near a seam. How can I patch this the best way? I want it to be waterproof. Might be a year or two before I can replace the top.....I was told a pool patch, that you heat up with a hair dryer....Sound stupid? Does anyone make a patch specifically for vert tops?

id sew the rip back up then you could try an iron on patch. but replacement is the fix...

Any special thread? I have black thread and sewing needles......But any specific type of thread?

if you're looking for a purely function patch, I used one that my Dad found online, and it completely keeps the water out (been on there for about five months). Not the prettiest thing, but it has stood up against several times at the local coin-op with the power washer.

Just use the silver duct tape that you can buy at Wal-Mart...........
