Factory Oil

Thanks for the oil info. I also, frequent Bob's site. Been looking for the shear rates between Amsoil 0-20 and their signiture series 0-30 which I have used for years. New to Fords and want to be up on what is best by the time I order...

I think most of the Oil tech has been covered already, so I'll just say this. If you need to top off your brand new car before it's time for your first oil change, I'd be taking it to the dealer to have it checked out. I'm at something over 60K in my 06 and never had to 'top off'. And my Escort that lived to over 160K (died cause I never got around to changing the timing belt) never needed a drop added to it between changes. And I sorta abused that one.

I would like to add....
Ford's modular engines are spec'd for 5W-30 in Australia....they don't have CAFE requirements to meet, and from what I've read.....not an ample supply of 5W-20.
I know an Amsoil dealer who runs 0W-30 SSO in his S197 4.6L and said it was an improvement over the 0W-20 fill he had previously. I'm pouring the SSO in my car tomorrow.
Since I am an Amsoil dealer myself....why not run the best? Besides, the 110 heat index in Florida right now is blistering!

Extended oil drains
This is not an Amsoil testimonal. Have been using Amsoil for ten + years and always liked the performance however, with my 2005 4.6 V-8 Toyota truck, Amsoil found out that the 4.6 Toyota engine fills the oil filter with debris much faster then normal and will not recommend any oil filters for extended use, including theirs. My point is until enough of the 5.0 engines have miles on them we do not know how they will perform. It was several years before Amsoil realized that the Toyota 4.6 V-8 had an issue. I know in light of Toyota's recent problems many will say "well thats a Toyota" but the point remains. We will not know how this engine will perform long term until enough miles have been put on them. Now, Amsoil will guarantee their signiture oil for 30+ thousand in the Toyota however, they recommend changing any filter at around 7,000 or so because it may go into bypass if run for more. I would say be prudent and if you are going to run any oil and filter past say 7,000 with a broken in engine then at least do several oil analysis to make sure that the engine is performing as it should....

Good info chuck, I recall reading about that engine. Wonder what makes it do that?
Update on the SSO in my car. It made the engine's valve train so quiet I can only hear the injectors ticking, nothing more. Car idles so smooth if it wasn't for the exhaust, you would have thought it wasn't running at all.

Toyota is a 4.7 not 4.6
Have been thinking Fords lately and had a brain fart. The Toyota V-8 which has its' problems is a 4.7. The engine runs great but shedding more metal than normal. Toyota has changed engines and hopefully the new one will be less prone to clog filters. Been doing oil analysis and mine is not abnormal but many are. Again, it will be a year or so till we know what the new 5.0 will do under everyday conditions..So in the meantime, monitor it carefully....
