5.0 Engine Noise when cold
I did a search and could not find anything on this and I thought I remembered reading a post but since I can not find it was wondering if anyone else is hearing a slight chatter when the engine is cold - it does it when I am driving and occurs between 2 - 3k rpm.
On a second note - I just changed my oil - went to Royal Purple 5w 20 (Currently have 5,500 miles) it is 44* here in KC and when I started it up there was some white smoke coming out the exhaust when I stepped on the gas. There is no leaks and I filled it up with 8 quarts (Expensive stuff) any ideas or concerns or does it sound normal (No engine light on)

I currently have 1000 mi on my 5.0 and live in Wisconsin where it has been consistently cold since I have been driving it. I only notice a slight chatter when first starting the engine. I try to let the car warm up until the idle reduces to below 1000 rpm, after that it seems to run fine.
On another note, have you noticed any stiffness and trouble shifting in your tranny when it is cold? I have the 6spd man with the 3.73 rear as well and a couple times when I have been driving when the car is cold and have noticed it is difficult to shift gears, especially 1st to 2nd. sometimes takes 2-3 seconds to get it into gear. I think it is probably just the syncros being cold but have you noticed any of this?

I think it's the transmission. I've been hearing the same...it's loud enough that you can hear it from outside the car (like someone standing on the sidewalk). It sounds like it's coming from underneath the car and not the engine bay. It goes away after a minute or two. And it pisses me off...cause I thought it would go away when it got warmer...but it's still here.

White "smoke" in cold weather is nothing more than condensation in the exhaust system. Oil would give blue smoke, coolant has a sweet smell and white smoke, to rich on fuel is black smoke.
No engine rattles on mine at almost 6000 miles.

When was your mustang manufactured if it was before June of 2010 then you have an issue with the bolts that hold the pressure plate in place.
On the white smoke went out and started it again and no smoke my neighbor said it is possible I goy a little in the valves when filling the oil, not there now so not going to worry.

Thought I would give an update - after driving into work this morning (I drive 70 miles one way) I noticed 3 miles per gallen better (Went from 21.2 to 24.2 avg) This is driving at 79 - 80 mph. Engine runs very smooth - That slight chatter noise is faint between 2 - 3k rpm and only when it is cold - once the engine warms up there is no noise at all. I think every engine has some kind of quirky characteristic about it and that may be it with this one. This weekend Royal Purple is going in the Tranny and in the Diff. Suppose to get better gas mileage when you put it throughout the drive train so will see what happens.
