Are gears a must have factory option?
I am looking into the mustang gt but to get my payment where I want it, it has to be a base model GT 6mt. The only option I am considering are the gears as I have heard it makes the car a whole different animal. For the money it seems better to have them factory installed rather than to pay and arm and a leg (and risk a bad install) later on.
Does anyone know what rpm the 6mt GT turns at 70mph in 6th with the 3.31, 3.55 and 3.73 gears?
I mostly drive mixed city/highway with occasional trips on the interstate @ 70-75. I will probably go to the 1/4 track a couple of times just to see what the car can do (never had a car before worth taking down the 1320!) I have heard that with 3.73's you end up doing an extra shift in the 1/4?
Are 3.55's the better all around option or not worth the difference over 3.31's?
For at least a couple of years this car will get nothing more than an intake/exhaust/tune and some wheels.

with 3.73's 70mph in 6th gear is about 2500rpms. and yes the gears were a must for me. my last 2 mustangs (07-08) had 3.55's. they were fun but nothing compared to the 3.73's in the new one. your always in the meat of a gear no matter what gear. just seen that if you run 1st gear up to 3k rpm's then the msg center will say 1-4 shift for best fuel economy and she pulls once you shift to 4th. but def dont get the 3.31's. you will be wanting to change the gears very quickly.
i just picked up my base 2012 gt last saturday. got my payment lowered by $15 on what i was paying for my loaded 08 gt. but this car is a base car with only 2 options. brembo's w/ the 19's and 3.73 gears. so deals are out there to be had just got to look around or tell a dealership what u want and let them search the area for it. good luck with ur choice. u'll enjoy it either way you go

u do have to shift a lot quicker but they are def a lot more fun when you get on it and feel the acceleration. my 3.55's in my 08 5 speed were a blast 92mph in 3rd gear. that will work. but i couldnt see getting the same gears for the 3rd stang in a row so thats why i went up a gear size.

'08 GT w/ 3.55s != '12 GT w/ 3.55s.
An extra gear and another 80-90lb/ft of torque means that the '11+ GTs need less gearing to achieve the same acceleration. 3.55s in a 5.0 GT will feel much like 3.73s in the 4.6 GT.

Cruise RPM difference between the 3 gear choices isn't much to worry about. Roughly 300 rpm between 3.31 vs 3.73's at any MPH with the 3.55's somewhere in the middle. Fuel mileage will not be drastically different, but acceleration with the steeper gear sets is definetely more dramatic.
I ordered my `12 as a base car with the Brembo's and 3.73's as I would rather pay out for performance vs fluff, and I'm extremely happy with my descision.
