2011 5.0 cold tick
#22
I used to get the tick in my old 3valve. Same issue, sounds like a tractor engine. I stopped putting in mobil one crap or motorcraft FYI, the motorcraft 5-20 that's shown as synthetic is on par with mobil one synthetic. Switched to Penzoil Platinum and the tick went away after the engine warmed up. Its most likely a lash adjuster not getting enough pressure. Just let her warm up before being hard on it.
As for the weight, ford says its a multi weight oil engine right in the manual. I would not hesitate to run 10-40 or 10-50 if I was tracking the car. However under normal street driving, 5-20 or 5-30 is perfect. As for quality of oil, I do know dyno oil contains large amounts of paraffin, this causes slugging like you would not believe.
Just as an FYI, if anyone has sludge issues with their older engine and its getting por mileage and plainly dirty... Most likely doing extended intervals with dino oil. Just pour in a quart of cheep ATF in the crankcase, drive it for about 10minutes lightly and drain oil and refill with synthetic or synthetic blend. It cleans older engines better than an engine flush and wont harm gaskets or rubber.
In Any case, I personally try to stay away from blends, they still have very large amounts of paraffin in them and they do cause viscosity issues, especially on hot running engines... AKA anything modern....
