2011 Mustang GT Rear End Gear Problem
#11
Motive makes some of the Ford Racing Gears. I cant remember what letter followed the P/N of the gears. I think if Ford made the gears the P/Nwas followed by the letter A. You can google motive gears made for Ford, and come up with the P/N to stay away from. Do you know what the P/N of the gears you bought? I have a feeling you got Motive gears when you bought them. If the P/N has the letter M at the end of it, they are made by Motive. if it a letter A, those are the Ford made gears.

The way the gears are cut, I dont think you can get them totaly quite. Some people after many times trying quit trying and just live with it. If your installer is charging you to try and fix them, I would bite the bullit and buy a new set of gears. I know it suxs, but the noise would drive me crazy.

Most techs can assemble a rear end, few actually do it properly.
If you have developed a whine for anymore than a hundred miles I'd doubt you'll ever get it to go away. Once they wear in - it's unlikely it will go away.
You could get new gears with a service part warranty and I'd have someone else set it up. It would be wise to run a pattern on the gears before you take out the carrier again - it will indentify any pinion depth or backlash issues. Sounds like he's got the depth wrong.
Calculating the correct pinion shim for a 8.8 is a matter of "feel" and you must have the gauging block at just the right angle. If he chose the wrong shim or didn't have the gauge block set perfect at 45* your depth will be incorrect.
Ask the technicians who's best at setting up gears and have him do it.....
Or I'd get my new gears under service part and take it to another shop.
