I have a new 2012 Mustang GT,I found a technical article that stated the engine oil from the Factory is 5W/20 weight (mineral)? Can any one confirm this?

what i found is its cheaper to let my dealer change my oil than for me to do it myself. anyone explain why this is?

Thank you. I was going to take it to the dealer at 500 miles. They use synthetic or blended synthetic and I do not want this until the motor is broke in,about 4,000 miles,depending on who you listen to. I'll use mineral oil when I change it at 500 miles. Thanks again.

grnbayfan.. My guess is Ford buys million gallons of oil and does not pay $5.00 a quart,and same with filters. Plus they get you in the show room. I stopped changing my oil a couple of years ago when I found out Ford does it for $32.00 for 6 qts. and filter,and you do not have to dispose of the oil,and your garage and you stay clean. Plus the top off all fluids,check brake wear etc.

If you don't mind Motorcraft oil, which Ford recommends, I suggest going to the dealer. It's cheap, relatively quick, your hands never get dirty and they wash your car for you. Besides, Ford would be liable for any issues arising from my oil changes.

The advantages of changing your own oil and filter are more than savings. It's a hobby of mine working on my cars (3). I do the brakes and change all the fluids and any doable jobs within my limits. When you change your own oil and filters, you get to choose the oil and filter you like. You also can choose the time you'd like to do it. It goes beyond saving a few bucks. After you are done with a job, you'd get that satisfaction that you've done a good job!

These cars come with a synthetic blend Motorcraft from the factory. Regarding the weight, it's stamped in bright yellow on the oil cap.

I just hit 20,000 miles, and after letting the dealership do my previous oil changes, I did my own this weekend.

It was nice to get under the car. It wasn't nice to see how sloppy the ford techs were...it was a mess under there. Oil (from removing the filter) all over the place.

I used Mobile 1 filter and oil, btw. $$$, but I like the bigger Mobile 1 filter. I also like giving things a good look under the car during the change...that, and my wife doesn't bother me when I'm "working" under the car

Depends on my mood. The dealership I go to is very good (or has been good with me). Sometimes I just like to drop it off and let them do it. They keep it clean and and it keeps me from having to go to the parts store...buy the stuff...change the stuff...dispose of the stuff... The cost is a wash.

Other times like this past weekend I showed my son how to do an oil change on his car so I went ahead and did mine too.

I do brakes and other filter changes on my own though. For example, I can't see spending $75 for a fuel filter change when the filter is only $10 and all you need is a pair of ramps to get the clearance you need under the car and 15 minutes to swap it out.
