Default 1st/2nd gear problems

Just purchased a 2012 GT 5.0 6spd manual on 3-25-2012. Car has about 300 miles on it now and have noticed some difficulties getting car into 1st/2nd gear from a complete or almost complete stop. I find myself feathering the clutch a bit to get it to slide fully into gear.

Anyone else had this issue or have any input on it?

Is this the skip shift feature? Do a search on skip shift and you might find out if it's that or something else.

Not the skip shift, I doubt. Simply sitting at a red light, press the clutch in, and attempt to put into 1st gear and it'll go halfway but I got to force with a little clutch feathering to get into gear.

Anyone got a potential diagnosis?

Is the car warmed up when this happens or cold?

Yep, in addition to whether it's warmed up or cold, do you notice that it gets better the longer you've been running the car? Or even after a longer drive you still have this issue at stop lights etc?

The odd part though is that your car should have all of the cold shifting problems "solved" at least as far as what the TSBs have done.

If the transmission fluid is warm and you're still having issues at a complete stop then I'd consider trying a different fluid like Redline MTL or BG Synchro Shift II. Having said that, your car is still new. Give it some time and break it in. I don't recommend "forcing" anything...If you come to a complete stop and have the issue then take it out of gear and try again, double clutch, etc., but never force it.

Usually, for the first 10-15 minutes of my first start of the day, I do a lot of 1 to 3 shifts until the fluid is warm and things are at normal operating temps. Then, I don't have any issues whatsoever. With 3.73 gears this is not a problem.

I just bought my 2012 GT 5.0 on the 25th as well! Creepy, we must be linked somehow.

In response to your question, however, I have had no problems getting into first or second. My biggest problem was that I forgot how to drive stick so I had trouble getting into any gear for the first two days. Other than that, I absolutely love my mustang and the only problem I've had is that my cup holders are pretty much useless. But when you drive a stick shift with a big *** V8 in front, you shouldn't be drinking anything anyway.

A technique that has worked for me is this.

Shift into first gear Before stoping. By simply downshifting while the gears and countershaft are still moving usually assists in meshing the gears. If you want to then shift out of first while stopped, go ahead. Shifting back into first hould be much easier since the gears should still be aligned.

Good luck.

It should not be that difficult. Maybe a little difficult from time to time. But, if it is a constant issue (warm or cold), take it in to get it looked at.

if it's consistently difficult even when warm, it may have some syncro issues that you should have looked at.

if its only when cold, they have a TSB to put some different fluid in.
