Default 5.0/4.6 BMW 3 series

I recently bought a 93 BMW 318IS without an engine. I found a dvd on ebay that instructs how to put a 5.0 V8 in it. I found a parts 97 mustang GT (4.6L) and I'm wondering if the 5.0 is close enough externally to use the 4.6 instead of the 5.0.

Wouldn't bother with the 97 motor. Do the sbf instead. You'll be happier. Just my .02

Not being very mechanically inclined, I wouldn't be attempting a Small Block Ford swap to a BMW.

If you aren't mechanically savvy, you should not attempt swapping a Ford motor into a BMW. Seriously, you'll never finish.

IF you REALLY want to install a real engine into your Beemer, I'd spend the coin and have a reputable shop swap in a Coyote 5.0. That would be pretty bangin!!! (That too is going to be a major PITA!)
