Default Give me the low down with this V8...

Good morning! I apologize if this thread sounds repetitive. I've read TONS of threads about the #8 cylinder issue, etc. but haven't found any definitive information.

I am in the process of buying my second Mustang (2013 GT, had a 2005 GT before) and intend to throw on a CAI/tune the day I get it. However, research into this has brought about a lot of information (and misinformation) about the #8 cylinder issue.

The challenge I'm having is that I can't find any RECENT information about it. What's the deal with this? Has this issue been more or less resolved or is still an ongoing concern? If the latter, is it something that should prevent me from buying a CAI/tune?

This is my garage queen, NOT my DD, so I'm less concerned about warranty and more concerned about reliability. Obviously I don't want my engine to go for no reason. I don't have the ability to pull the engine without significant expense (single car garage) to install the cooling mod that seems to be popular, so that's something to consider.

Thank you for your educated replies. I've found this forum immensely helpful and full of great people and information!

PS - hello

Have not had any issues with mine but I am only at 3750 miles. My only real complaint is the stock shifter is not to great. It's hard to tell which gear its want to go to sometimes or you miss a shift etc.

The Coyote came out in 2011 so it's had a few years to mature a bit too.

So, CAI/tune/catback since mile 27 on the odometer and no issues yet! 12,257 miles as of right now. Oh and I beat the crap out of it

So is the #8 cylinder issue something that isn't generally a problem at this point?

I haven't read very much about 2013 model year cars being affected, but again, it's difficult to find reliable information.

Thanks!

Yeah hard to say really, engines been out since 2011 so finding issues with them is still pretty hard I would guess. I looked into that when I got mine too but as you said hard to really find much on it. They pushed more horsepower out of the engine each year except for the 2014's still pushing 420hp.

Well I just spoke to the dealer and my white GT is on its way. I paid $300 to have it shipped instead of driven (coming from a city about 150 miles away).

First things first: lowering springs, panhard bar, shocks. I'll do the intake/tune/exhaust when I've had more time to look into it.

I bought a new '13 GT recently and with 1,200 miles on it last week I installed the typical bolt-ons. One thing I noticed was when installing my Boss intake is how nasty the intake ports were on the heads, looked like a mixture of oil & fuel deposits. I've only ran 100% gasoline.
After some reading I decided to install a Moroso oil separator, I can see how the blowby on these engines can contaminate the intake charge maybe even to the point of detonation. Don't know if this can kill #8 cylinder but a separator can't hurt.
Oh yeah, can't believe how much this engine woke up with a few parts!!!

I think #8 issues were being seen in the early stages of people tuning the new 5.0, now that is has been around for a few years they have it figured out pretty well. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you stay with a reputable tuner. My tune has been on the car since I bought it and I have had zero problems.

Come to think of it I haven't read much discussing 2013 models and the #8 issue. I wonder if the problem has been more or less resolved for '13 and '14 model years.

From what I can tell there have been about 15-20 total #8 failures and all of them have been tuned. There are claims that stock cars are also causing issues but these are unverified.

There should be some kind of information source for all of this.
