Default BAMA Tune/CAI Issue

I found a thread on this issue a few months back (don't even know if it was this forum or not), but for the life of me I can't find it.

The problem I've had with my Bama tune ever since I got it (Sept. 2012) was that the throttle had a bit of a lag/kicking around after a cold start. If you let it sit for a little while to warm up, it is usually fine. If you are trying to do light movements with the car (trying to let just the clutch do the work), it likes to hiccup a bit and sometimes stalls. However, I was wondering if anyone had found out what was causing this kind of behavior. Is it something that could hurt the engine?

Since I got a laptop recently, I figured I might try out data logging the tune to see if it will show anything, but I have not done data logging before. Would this be something that could remedy the issue?

I have a Steeda CAI (101mm?) and Borla ATAK Axleback, and that's as far as the bolt on's go for the intake/exhaust portion. I mainly run the Street Performance (I have run the Race tune before as well), and use mid to high octane gas even though the tunes are set for 87 (except for the RACE). The lag/choke happens on any tune, and with any kind of gas. I use the iTSX Tune with my Motorola Droid MAXX.

Any help would be appreciated, and I can gather whatever data/videos needed to explain the situation better,

-John

Haven't been able to yet, since they were already closed when I started this venture. I'll be calling them Tuesday when I am off from work. I was mainly wondering if there is anything major to be concerned about. There aren't any CEL's or anything, just an annoyance with the throttle kick.

Mine used to do the same thing. I think it has to do with the motor being cold and throttle sensitivity. Colds starts and low speed/RPM's were the only time it did it. I just let it run for a minute or two now and dont have any problems. I am not an expert this is just my experience with that issue.

I'm sorry to hear about the on going issue you're having, at a cold start. We can definitely look into this for you, make a few adjustments and you'll be good to go! We send out thousands of tunes and build them all from the ground up for your PCM code and your mods. They're not just "canned" tunes, they're built custom by our team, so every once in a while it's possible we mess one up! We'll definitely get it straightened out for you, though! Give one of our Bama Tuning Specialists a call and they'll work with you to figure out exactly what's going on.

Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 9AM-5:30PM EST.

Thanks Dan. I was going to make a call today to get the ball rolling so I can do the data logging tomorrow. Hopefully the issues can be worked out.

So just to update,

I just talked to Don at Bama. First we are going to try to update the firmware/software on the tuner (my firmware is v1.001 when they have a v1.008 out). I tried finding a change log of the differences between all of those versions, but it seems they only list what the latest one does. Some issues have been fixed by the firmware, however if it doesn't work for me, then I'll do the data logging tomorrow and will send it in to see what they may have to tweak.

Update #2:

Updated the firmware on the tuner to the latest, and also flashed the ECU to the newer set of tunes. Don advised to get a new set regardless because the firmware could have screwed up the original ones when the tuner ran through its update.

So far the car hasn't done the kicking around yet, and the idle is a little higher/smoother than what it was on the old tune (only higher by a couple 100 RPM at the most). The idle seems "normal" for what I expect in a modern V8. I think with the other tune, it was trying to do a very slight lope. I was able to just "clutch" drive it in reverse and forward in the driveway with no hiccups.

I got called into work today, but I get off early. It may be a bit before it exhibits the kicking around, and if it does, then the next step is the data log.

This sounds a lot like what I was experiencing. Only when cold there was a little lag and hiccups, as you described it. And, once warm, it was fine. I did two things and it was fixed so I am not certain which it was. I had recently removed the sound tube and put it back on after talking to BAMA. The idea being that there may have been a leak around where the sound tube connects my Steeda CAI. I also loaded a new tune that was recently sent to me that included turning off the O2 sensors. Since it was fine before I removed the sound tube, I don't think it was the tune. I think I had a leak and maybe you do too. Check to make sure all is snug all around your intake.

Yeah, I have done that already. Actually after my trip from Talladega (early May), i did notice that the tube came off of the throttle body side. When I went back through the connections, i made sure they were tighter, and a little deeper into the rubber rings to seal it better. Last I checked (about a week or two ago) they were still on tight.

The sound tube has never come off other than to switch the intake. I still have the sound tube cap that Steeda sends with the CAI, but never thought of taking the tube off.

The issue has been plaguing me ever since I had gotten the CAI and tune back in Sept. It still did it after I had tightened everything. However, driving to work this morning, the newer firmware/tunes have not shown any signs of problems yet. Just waiting to see if it will act up again before hitting the data logs.
