Default 5.0 oil related questions.

I just got my 2014 GT last Tuesday. What brand of oil are you guys using in yours? Should I stick with Motorcraft or something else. I use Pennzoil yellow bottle in all of my other vehicles.

At what miles should I change out the factory fill oil?

Do any of you use the oil change minder to change your oil by or do you just go by mileage? I never used the oil change minder on my 2004 Monte Carlo SS that I traded in for this car but changed every 5,000 miles or one year.

Are you guys running synthetic, semi-synthetic, or conventional oil? Thanks.

Did you buy the maintenance program or anything. I bought mine cause it was easier to just slap those fees into my financing than to always make sure I have to have it on hand or use my CC for service. If you did check how it's setup I know with mine I have to go in for service every 8000km(5000mi) instead of just using the oil monitor system.

As for oil i'm all about Mobil1 or AMSoil but Royal Purple gets a lot of love aswell I just have not personally every used it. I am a bit old school and believe should work the engine through a service and not go the synthetic route till 16,000km(10,000mi). I know a lot will say most engines come warn in from the manufacturer but like I said I am a bit old school when it comes to that.

I got a couple thousand more km's before I hit the 16,000 on my '13 and I will be switching to AMSoil Full Synthetic.

I'm partial to Pennzoil full syn 5/20 at Walmart for $25 a jug...and the Motorcraft filters. Just changed mine this weekend....dash display said 10% life left, I had gone 9500 mostly highway miles.

I usually switch to syn after about 5 - 8K miles of spirited driving on a new car.

Make sure to check the oil level regularly, these things go through it pretty quickly. I have to add a qt every 1700mi. Don't forget a catch can as well, keep that oil out of the intake and beyond.

Amsoil or Royal Purple. You *will* feel a difference.

Question about the oil minder on the dash...

The oil was changed on mine at 46k when I bought it, so the dealer said (and it was very clean so I believe them), and 5k miles later (about 3500 of them highway) I was down under 10%. Now on my fresh oil change, 1k miles later (700 of those highway...been a busy couple months with work and traveling lol), I'm at 80% which puts me on track for another 5k mile oil change, even though the manual calls for every 10k miles. Is this normal?

But back to the OP's question, A lot of people are running Amsoil and love it. I changed to Mobil 1 10w-30 and the engine has quieted down and isn't consuming oil like it did before.

Thanks for the replies. I did not get the maintenance plan as I do all of my own maintenance. I have an oil catch can on order so I will install it when it arrives.

The other main question I have is whether to stay with the 5W-20 viscosity or go up to 5W-30 that seems to be recommended all over the net for this engine. I don't want to have warranty issues so that makes me a little leery of using anything other than 5W-20. Thanks.

It depends on conditions.. and filter.. among other things. Getting 5,000 between changes is actually good. I get 4-7,000.. mostly around 4.

OP. You can't go wrong with Mobile 1 synthetic and Motorcraft filters. You get get Mobil 1 full synth in 5 quart jugs at wallmart.

I run the factory 5W20. Been thinking about 5W30.

recently installed a passenger side oil catch can.. and am amazed at how much it picks up. Technically "needed" or not.. I like knowing that gunk isn't building up in the intake now.
